At the heart of our school are the children, and what we hope they will learn and grow to become.
As Parents and Carers, there is much that you need to know about what we do in school, the values and aims which guide us and the vital part that you can play in your child's education. We hope that this website is both comprehensive and useful.
The best way to get to know us however, is to see the school in action and to talk to us about those aspects of school life that are important to you.
St. Mary's is in the town of Yate, South Gloucestershire. The original school opened in Victorian times with the present buildings replacing it in 1968. The central hall has seven classrooms clustered around it, while the recent Heathfield building contains three other classrooms.
The school takes children from 4-11 years - with a maximum intake of 45 in any one year group. Class sizes are 30 for children up to age 7 and around 33 for older classes. Each of the ten classes is mixed ability, taught in the main by one teacher, supported by additional teachers and classroom assistants. Our vision for St. Mary's School is that it will be a happy and enthusiastic community where everyone is important and enjoys learning.
All relationships will be based on consideration, respect, teamwork and Christian values.
Children will be given support and challenge in their work and there will be high expectations for their behaviour.
Diversity, effort, acheivement and care for others will all be encouraged, recognised and celebrated.
We believe that children get the most out of their time at school, when it is supported by a partnership between staff and parents. You are always welcome to share in the life of the school in whatever way you can.
Children love to play, explore, ask questions, imagine, try things out, and become good at new skills - consequently they are always learning! In school our task is to structure their experience so that they learn as much as possible in key areas, and take part in a broad and varied programme of learning activities, which reflects the richness and diversity of both the human and natural world.
